Prodigy is a commercial on-line service available the public and offering information such as News and Weather, Business and Finance, Sports, Communications, Entertainment, Reference, Shopping, Computers, Travel, Home, Family and Kids and more.
Prodigy differs from CompuServe and America Online in that it is a client-server distributed network. Prodigy data is transmitted to a mainframe server that processes memberships, service communications and basic systems management. The server also runs applications such as the Web Browser. Data is sent through T1/T3 networks and distributed to Prodigy local sites, or PLSs. PLSs distribute data to users through various channels such as LANs, POTS, local and national VANs, cable and ISDN. This provides constant, interactive dialogue between the service and its members.
